Yesterday afternoon, Pedro Duque, the Spanish Minister for Science and Innovation, visited Ormazabal’s premises in Boroa, Bizkaia. Accompanied by the Spanish Government’s Representative in the Basque Country, Denis Itxaso, and the Spanish Secretary General for Innovation, Teresa Riesgo, the Minister learned first-hand about the trials and research being carried out at Ormazabal’s Research and Technology Centre (CIT), the only one of its kind in world.
Javier Ormazabal, President of Velatia, and Jorge González, CEO of Ormazabal, were in charge of presenting the facilities, which are used mainly for testing and technological innovation applied to smart electrical networks. In Pedro Duque ’s words, “Ormazabal’s innovative technological solutions related to energy sustainability are central to the ecological transition.”
The visit, which followed a meeting with Confebask and other visits to innovative companies based in the province of Bizkaia, highlights the importance of the electricity industry, which will make a vital contribution to social and economic recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ormazabal believes that having a culture of innovation is the best way to drive growth. In this context of commitment and vocation, Ormazabal’s Research and Technology Centre CIT was set up in 2008 for the purpose of identifying, acquiring and disseminating strategic technologies among the organization for the development of its new products and services.
This research centre contains the High Power Laboratory (HPL) and the Demonstration and Experimentation Unit (UDEX), the only site of its kind in the world, which allows the world’s different medium-voltage electricity distribution networks to be reproduced experimentally. This facility is specially designed for the development of technologies related to Smart Grids.
