Development of a scalable substation solution for BESS project

With delivery time constraints becoming increasingly shorter, we have developed a package substation solution that can be easily scaled to meet customer demands. By creating a standard panel design that fulfils various applications and utilizing modern protection relays, we have significantly reduced development, build, delivery, and on-site testing times.

Powersystems are a leading high voltage specialist electrical engineering company established in 1977 and becoming the first UK Independent Connection Provider in 1997. Ormazabal have been working closely with Powersystems for over 15 years delivering switchgear and package substation solutions throughout the UK.

Ormazabal Solution

A complete GRP package substation solution. The switchboard comprised 14 panels of ENA assessed CPG.0 switchgear with a 1250A busbar rating, STWC: 31.5kA and motorised disconnectors. Trapped Key interlocking fitted across the entire switchboard integrating with a larger site wide scheme.

An Integrated 110Vdc dual charger arrangement offering redundancy and over 48hrs standby time.

Fully installed and tested LV installation including Air conditioning, lighting and power. A cat flap and change over socket enables power to be connected to the sub as soon as it is offloaded providing a warm, dry and bright environment for cabling works to be completed.

ABB relays were used for the protection and control scheme utilising IEC 61850 Goose messaging for inter panel signalling. The incomer required EF/OC protection, Busbar protection, Line differential protection and G99 covering the sources of generation. Each individual feeder be it an Auxiliary transformer, Earthing transformer, Harmonic filter or Battery storage feeder required individual EF/OC protection. A Remote Operating Panel (ROP) utilising a PRP fibre connection provided a touch screen representation of the switchboard in a distanced control room. The use of a seperate marshalling cabinet provided a single point of connection for all LV signals, external trip inputs and metering CT /  VT outputs enabling the substation to be fully tested prior to delivery.

Key benefits for client:

  • User configurable protection logic scheme easily adapted through software simplifying possible site modifications.
  • Fully tested factory solution.
  • Simplified install and commissioning on site.
