As part of our commitment to combat climate change, an inherent challenge in our activity as a prominent agent in the electrification and decarbonization of society, at Ormazabal we mitigate the climate impact of our activity by achieving a 37% reduction in CO2 emissions from industrial production. This new milestone is based on various energy efficiency initiatives carried out in several of our centers. This marks a new achievement in our path to achieving the intermediate decarbonization target of 68% of our activity by 2030 and the more ambitious goal of climate neutrality by 2050.
Additionally, in 2023 we promoted various initiatives in Bizkaia with the Lurgaia Foundation. Specifically, Ormazabal colleagues participated in the planting of 900 native trees and shrubs on a 90,847 m2 plot, within the Undabaso project, which covers 197 hectares. This volunteer action involves a compensation of 260 tons of CO2 over forty years, according to the certificate issued by the Lurgaia Foundation. In addition to compensation, these projects aim to restore and promote biodiversity and are carried out with a “corporate volunteering” approach, with the participation of around seventy people in 2023.
Ormazabal, in its commitment to combat climate change and as a necessary step to reduce its CO2 emissions, calculates the carbon footprint of its activities, quantifying both direct and indirect emissions of its activities. In 2023, in association with the Empresa y Clima foundation, it continued the pilot project launched in 2022 to calculate Scope 3 emissions of three organizations within the company.
In addition, in recent years we have worked to ensure that all Ormazabal facilities in Spain and France are powered solely by certified 100% renewable electricity. A milestone that we will work to extend to the rest of the countries where we have a presence.
